Obedience
Offerings:
Tuesday
Night Classes
Beginner
:
Good, basic obedience class for
both pet dog and an introduction into competition classes
(open to all dogs over 4 months of age). Long-line training
for attention in motion, heeling properly, and settle are
some of the commands in this class. Instruction sheets are
given each week for at-home practice.
Pre-Novice:
Handler
and dog work together to perfect the basic commands from
Beginner Class (heeling, sit, stay) and more difficult
commands are added (stand for exam, come front). The
handler/dog team gains the experience required to take the
AKC Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) title (open to all
breeds including Mix). This is a prerequisite class for
handlers/dogs going on to advanced competition classes.
Rally/Advanced
Rally
(dog can earn RN/RA/RE titles): Rally
offers both dogs and handlers an experience that is
energizing. Dogs/handlers follow a course of signs that
encourages teamwork through designated stations (10 - 20,
depending on the level).
Rally provides a link from the Canine Good
Citizen® (CGC) program to obedience or agility
competition, both for dogs and handlers. In addition, rally
promotes fun and enjoyment for dogs at all levels of
competition.
Wednesday
Night Classes
Novice
(Novice, in which the dog can
earn the CD or Companion Dog title): This class is for
those who have completed the Pre-Novice training and wish to
advance in the sport of obedience. Novice obedience is the
first level of competitive obedience. In Novice, the dog
will have to heel both on- and off-lead at different speeds,
come when called, stay (in a sit and down) in a group of
dogs, and stand for a simple physical exam by the judge.
Some of the exercises are done on-lead and some are done
off-lead in Novice.
Open (Open,
in which the dog can earn the CDX. or Companion Dog
Excellent title):
Building on the fundamentals learned in Novice class,
participants teach their dogs the dumbbell retrieve. In
Open, the dog must do similar exercises as in Novice, but
all exercises are done off-leash and the time periods are
extended for stays. Open obedience also requires that the
dog retrieve ("on the flat") and retrieve over a jump.
Utility
(Utility, where the dog can earn
the UD or Utility Dog title): Utility is the final and most
challenging level of obedience. All exercises are done
off-leash and some of the work is done with hand signals.
Tasks such as scent discrimination and directed jumping are
required in Utility obedience. This is an advanced class for
dogs that are titled in Obedience.
Please Note: If your dog is new to our classes and is
signing up for any class other than Beginners, prior approval is
needed.
